>This item is a wonderful, original document, dated 1805, Falmouth, Maine, where Samuel Freeman has signed a writ for non-payment...signed at bottom by Freeman, 6x8, overall good condition.

Samuel Freeman (1743-1831) was a prominent citizen of Portland, Maine during the 18th and 19th centuries. He was instrumental in founding the first public library in Portland (then Falmouth), Maine, served in the judiciary system as judge and clerk, as well as held the post of the first postmaster of Portland, in 1775.

Samuel spent the early, critical years of the Revolution in Boston as Falmouth’s representative to the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. Despite his youth, his skills were quickly recognized and he was elected clerk of the House in [April?] July, 1775, when that body met at Watertown (Boston being still occupied by the British).

Unfortunately, he was in Massachusetts when an English fleet burned Falmouth in October, 1775. His father’s property loss was in the top ten of the town and Samuel – surprisingly, given his youth – was directly behind him in the list.
