SIGNED CATHARINE G WILLARDS PIECE SUMNER HALL SCHOOL AGE 11 FEBRUARY 6TH 1806
FROM SOME RESEARCH I BELIEVE THAT SUMNER HALL SCHOOL WAS SUMNER HALL SCHOOL was the very first wooden building, constructed on the right hand side of Palmer Street, originally Sumner Street;built in 1798 in accordance with a vote of the leaders of the town of Roxbury to erect "A DECENT SCHOOLHOUSE IN SOME CONVENIENT PLACE". When first built Sumner Hall was known to locals as "The New Schoolhouse of Roxbury",and was established at the behest of GOV. INCREASE MATHER WHO DONATED THE LAND TO THE TOWN IN 1795! The school building is described in the petition of the town proprietors as "Fort (40) by twenty two feet". The lower level was designated for the daily school, and the upper level for an assembly room.(from the book "The Town of Roxbury; Its Memorable Persons and Places' by Francis Samuel Drake. Many of the most important Boston area citizens met in that upper assembly room,Paul Revere not the least of them. He was Grand Master of all the Boston area Masons, and oversaw the initiation of officers of the famous Washington Lodge Freemasons who met in that upper meeting room. That Masonic Lodge along with all the schoolchildren and military dignitaries of the town and surrounding areas, gatd at Sumner Hall School on Jan.14,1800 for the famous funeral gathering paying tribute to George Washington.
AROUND THE CENTER PIECE HAS CIRCLES IN DIFFERENT STYLE CALLIGRAPHY WITH THE 13 ORIGINAL STATES WITH THE POPULATION OF INHABITANTS, REPRESENTATIVES, AND SENATORS. ON THE CORNERS ARE LATER STATES ADDED IN THE UNION: KENTUCKY OHIO TENNESSEE AND VERMONT. ON THE OTHER SIDE IS A TRACT ON TRUE PATRIOTISM READING: OF ALL THE DISPOSITIONS AND HABITS WHICH LEAD TO POLITICAL PROSPERITY RELIGIOUN AND MORALITY ARE INDISPERISABLE SUPPORTS. IN VAIN WOULD THAT MAN CLAIM THE TRIBUTE OF PATRIOTISM, WHO WOULD LABOUR TO SUBVERT THESE GREAT PILLARS OF HUMAN HAPPINESS.
