1818 President James Monroe Document Signed By President James Monroe:
Very rare and wonderful, 1818 Document Signed by James Monroe as President of the United States. This fantastic, hand signed document measures approx. 13 1/4” x 8 3/8” being a partially printed Ohio Land Grant transferring a parcel of land near Zanesville, Ohio to one John S. Corp of Butler County, Ohio. The Document is dated June 30th, 1818 and is issued to "John S. Corp assignee of Orgillaus Doan" at Zanesville, Ohio. The land is identified as "the Southwest quarter in Section Six, of Township five of range eight". The document is printed on vellum and is signed in brown ink “James Monroe" at the lower right hand corner.
This Document is accompanied by an 1821 manuscript survey and deed to the parcel of land as well as a modern packet of research regarding the farm established by the land grant, north of Marietta, Ohio, the first surveyed town in the Northwest Territory. The manuscript survey is dated March 20, 1821, signed by Washington County, Ohio, surveyor William R. Putnam; deed of conveyance dated May 3, 1870.
This Land Grant was signed by President James Monroe himself and the signature is not a secretarial or proxy. It was not until the middle of the Andrew Jackson administration that the task of signing Land Grants was relegated to the Commissioner of the General Land Office and this James Monroe signature is 100%, unconditionally guaranteed authentic and in the hand of the President himself.
This very rare, Pres. James Monroe, Signed Document is in very good condition. The signature of Pres. Monroe is quite large and attractive as well as dark and bold. The document is printed on heavy vellum stock and exhibits the typical pair of vertical and horizontal folds associated with vellum Land Grants of this period. The sheet is generally clean with some light soiling and the Document retains the original affixed, embossed seal at the lower left hand corner. All of the manuscript entries are easily readable though just a tad faded (the Monroe signature, however, is dark and bold). Overall this is a well preserved example of a wonderful President James Monroe signed Document that displays beautifully.
