1819 JJ 8Reales

Ferdinand VII

Mexico City Mint

In1819 there was only one type of 8 Reales issued by the Mexico City Mint.

Onthe Portrait 8 Reales which started in 1772, the practice at the mint was toidentify the assayers by placing the senior assayer’s initial first when goingaround the coin clockwise, using the initial of what we call “the first name”in the United States of America. “Senior” refers to the assayer hired first atthe mint.

JoaquinDavila Madridwas an assayer from 1809 into 1833 and Jose Garcia Ansaldo from 1812 into 1833.

In1819 the initials JJ refer to these 2 assayers.

MexicoCity 8 Reales from the inception of milled coinage in 1732 through the ArmoredBust series ending in 1811 had a targeted official weight of 27.0674 grams. Starting with the Draped Bust series thatbegan in 1811 through the end of this series in 1821 these coins had anincreased weight of 27.07 grams. Thiscoin is from the Draped Bust series.

Thesilver purity level throughout the Draped Bust series (1811-21) was 90.3% puresilver, having been increased from the earlier purity level of 89.6% thatexisted starting in 1791 and lasting through the Armored Bust series concludingin 1811.

Whena silver coin like this one tones, it goes from white to black. Toning is a term that describes the discoloration orlight patina that forms on the surface of coins due to oxygen and chemicals inthe air acting on the metal. This oxidation also depends on the properties ofthe metal. Toning is a slow and normalprocess that can take months to years to appear. A coin that’s toned is in a normal\"stage\" of its life. The tonecolor will normally take centuries to reach its very darkest appearance. Silver will tone from bright silver to brownto black. Sometimes rainbow-style colors appear in the toning of silver.

Thephysical appearance of a coin will differ depending on the type, intensity andangle of the light under which we view the coin.

Forphotographing this toned coin, I use a 100 watt incandescent light bulb at adistance of about 1 foot. Incandescentlight is the type used when grading coins.

Forthe photographs shown, the coin and the light stay very much the same distancefrom each other, but not exactly the same.I took photographs from different angles. When camera – light – coin arein somewhat vertical alignment, the coin appears darker, as seen in some of thephotographs. Since varying tones do notchange much when the angle of light is changed, the darkness is a deep tone.
