1830 Pair Sduk Maps Modern And Ancient Rome Clarke Italy Genuine Old Antique:
A pair of maps: "Plan of Modern Rome, Published under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge" and "Plan of Ancient Rome,Published under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge"Both maps published by Baldwin & Cradock, 47, Paternoster Row, in 1830, and both engraved by J&C Walker. They were drawn up by the architect William Bernard Clarke (1806 - 65), who designed many of the maps in the SDUK series. An important figure in his day (he was founding President of the Architectural Society of London in 1831), he was said to have spent many years in Rome when he was young. His enthusiasm is evident in these maps.
A fine pair of maps, the one showing the state of the City in 1830, and the other, Rome in the days of the Empire. Clarke, the architect, likes to add profiles of the principle buildings on his maps, along the bottom, and does so here on both these maps. The map of Ancient Rome contains a huge amount of detail, with a key down the left hand side of over 100 sites and buildings. In addition, there are notes branching off from the sides of the walls, such as "The Aquaduct called Anio Vetus 42 miles long... built entirely of arches except 7/10 of a mile." The 'Modern' map has a similar key down the left hand side, and notes "Three Hundred and Sixty-Five Churches and a great many fountains and Palaces adorn the City of Rome...."
The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was set up in 1826 under the auspices of Lord Brougham, the aim being to provide at a reasonable cost material for those self-taught, or unable to obtain a formal education. It published a large number of maps, ranging from countries to city plans.
These are genuine antique maps that would frame up nicely. A wonderful item for anyone keen on the City, by someone who clearly knew and loved the City himself.
Size: the sheets each measures approx. 42cms x 35cms.Condition:Both maps a little bit browned at the edges, but otherwise in good condition.
