This was probably the most coveted book in early America. It was a complete guide to life in those times with 5,000 remedies, receipts and recipes for every need on the farm. It is a complete medical book, cookbook, and guide to all the handcrafted and genial arts. People felt better just having a copy of Mackenzie’s Five Thousand Receipts in the house.

The Preface states: “As the object of all study, and the end of all wisdom, is practical utility, so a collection of the most approved Receipts, in all the arts of Domestic and Social life, may be considered as a volume containing nearly the whole of the wisdom of man, worthy of preservation. In truth, the present volume has been compiled under the feeling, that if all other books of Science in the world were destroyed, this single volume would be found to embody the results of the useful experience, observations, and discoveries of mankind during the past ages of the world.”

CONDITION: This book is 182 years old! and is in Good condition for its age. Full leather with original spine label still present. All pages present, sturdy and tightly bound. It is obvious that this book was exposed to fire at some point – the leather on the spine and along top of boards is blackened and cracked. There is no smoky odor or odor of any type, however. The front board was reinforced on the inside with clear binding tape. The front endpapers have the signature of a former owner and his small stamp, and some library markings as pictured below. No other library markings. The book measures 9” x 5 ½” and has 456 pages.
