1834 "mitchell's Travellers Guide Through The United States, A Map" For Sale

1834

A scarce folding map in its original gilt-stamped, brown leather binding. Measuring approximately 3.25"x 5.25" closed, attached to the inside of one cover is a folding index of such then-relevant information as steam boat canals, populations (for the years 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820 and 1830) of slaves, whites and freed black people and heights of significant hills/mountains. Attached to the other cover is a folding map of the United States including the then territories of Michigan, Missouri and Arkansas, as well as detail renderings of several important cities including New Orleans and New York (the latter interesting as it shows Manhattan only partially developed). The two folding enclosures are complete with some minor ink markings by an early owner; there is one small tear in one portion of the index with no loss and there is need of a hinge repair to one fold of the map (the fold simplyseparatedfrom use, no soiling or loss with a clean line for repair). Each side (Map/Index) measures approximately 17.75" x 22" when open. This hand-colored map of the United States is in remarkable condition for its age and perishable nature and would make an interesting addition to any collection of rare books or maps. Please email with any questions.
