1835 Journal / Diary Of Trip From Boston To Canada Via Niagara Falls - 1835 For Sale
This hand written diary from 1835documents a trip from Boston to Quebec via NiagaraFalls and Buffalo. This wonderful hand written journal is fresh from a Rhode Island estate! Unfortunately I don't know the name of the person that kept the journal, however, the journal is full of names of people that the traveler met along the way. This remarkable diary gives insight to how difficult, laborious, time consuming and interesting traveling was 178 years ago! The trip starts in Boston on Wednesday June 24, 1835 were they took passage on the "Worcester Cars" (Boston & Albany Railroad) and travelled as far as Westboro, Mass. (the end of the line)and the writer comments how they "travelled 30 miles in two hours". From Westboro they boarded a stagecoach. Most of the journey is traveled by stagecoach and steamboat, however, they also travel by canalboat. The writer documents most of the stage changes and the names of the inns were they slept and dined as well as the names of many of the people they meet along the way. The writer also documents the names of the steamboats as well as the names of some of the Captains. The writer also documents how many miles traveled each day, the names of all the towns they traveled through and also gives the weather conditions for each day of the trip. These were weallthy travelers and stayed at the best places in each town. One of themore interesting places they stayed was the Shaker Village in New Lebanon, New York,The trip took them up the Hudson river to Albany and thenonto Saratoga Springs and then across the state to Buffalo and Niagara stopping in Little Falls, Utica, and other towns along the way. From Buffalothey traveled by water to Montreal and Quebec. They made friends with two couples they met in upstate New York, Mr. and Mrs. Adams and Mr. and Mrs.S. Dorr (possibly Sullivan Dorr from Providence R.I.). Apparently they became friends and travelling companions. The 4 x 6 inch diary contains 53 hand written pages. The diary is written in pencil and is perfectly legible. The diary ends on the way fom Montreal to Quebec. This is a very interesting diary that was written at a time when the modes of transportaion were changing. Travel by locomotive was in its infancy and travel by steamboat was also relatively new as was travel by canalboat. As with all of my items I am starting this sale at $9.99 with !
