John Francis Davis, 1st Baronet KCB (1795 - 1890) was a British diplomat, Sinologist, and the 2nd Governor of Hong Kong. Davis was appointed as a writer in the East India Company's factory at Canton in 1813. Because of his linguistic abilities, he was chosen to accompany Lord Amherst to his embassy in Peking in 1816. On the return from the mission, Davis returned to his duties in the factory at Canton, and was promoted to president in 1832. He was appointed the joint commissioner in China together with Lord Napier in 1834. In 1844, he was appointed as the Governor of Hong Kong. Apparently he was a very unpopular Governor, due to his treatment of his subordinates & his introduction of various different taxes, he did however, introduce week-end racing during his tenure. - Sourced from Wikipedia This work contains descriptions of food, drink and costumes, bonsais, female Chinese feet, Buddhism and many other subjects.
