This wonderful Map is tipped onto the inside front cover of a Volume (also published by Mitchell & Hinman, 1838) which is fully titled “An Accompaniment to Mitchell's Reference and Distance Map of the United States; Containing an Index of All the Counties, Districts, Townships, Towns, &c., in the Union; Together with an Index of the Rivers, by Which any County, District, Township, &c., or River May be Found on the Map Without Difficulty; also, a General View of the United States and the Several States and Territories; With an Account of the Actual and Prospective Internal Improvements Throughout the Union; the Whole, in Connexion with the Map, Illustrating the Geography, Topography, and Statistics of the Union, in a More Complete and Satisfactory Manner than has been Hitherto Attempted”. Philadelphia, 1838. Published by Mitchell & Hinman.

This outstanding, hand colored, Folding Map measures approx. 23” by 18 1/2” and is bound into the Volume which measure approx. 5 5/8" by 9" and contains 344 pages which include 178 pages of tables that identify cities, towns, rivers and other locations giving their locations on the folding map using the grid printed in the margins of the Map. The remaining pages of the Volume includes a text description of the various States and Territories as they existed in 1838 (before the Mexican American War and the resulting acquisitions).

The Map depicts the United States west to the Eastern portion of the Wisconsin and Missouri Territories and Eastern Texas (then shown as part of Mexico. Included are 8 inset maps of major American Cities including Boston, New York, Charleston, Baltimore/Washington, Hartford/New Haven, Albany, Philadelphia and the Niagara Falls area. There is also an inset Table giving the distances between the capitol and/or largest cities of each state.

This very rare and highly sought after, Hand Colored, Folding Map of the United States is printed on VERY delicate paper stock. Overall the Map is in good to very good condition - generally clean with bright and attractive hand coloring. The sheet as some loss at the lower left hand corner (slightly affecting the image area but not the map area itself) as well as a small amount of loss to the margin at the center of the right hand edge along the attachment to the Volume. There are some archival tape repairs and reinforcements at some of the folds and fold junctions as well as some areas of toning (mostly along the fold lines) and a few small spots of staining (as can be seen in the scans below).

The Volume is bound in its original half leather and marble boards which are sound and intact but edge worn. The interior pages are complete, tight and sound with some foxing throughout but no significant wear or damage of any kind.

We are not 100% sure tha this Map was original to this Volume. We have encountered examples of this Volume in the past and have never seen an example with a Map bound in. There is no doubt, however, that the Map is the Map and edition that is described within the Volume however it is possible that the Map was tipped into the Volume rather than having been originally issued with the Volume.

A very rare and highly desirable, 1838, Hand Colored, Folding Map of the United States and a fantastic addition to any Library or Collection!!!
