1840 - U.s.navy Letter Conduct Unbecomming An Officer - Dr.magill 1840:
This is an extremely rare letter concerning the "ungentllemanly conduct" of a midshipman serving aboard the US Navy Sloop of War Branrywinerare in 1840. Theletter was written by Dr. Magill from the US Naval Hospitalat Port Mahon, Spain in the year 1840. The letter is dated "U.S.NAVAL HOSPITAL MAHON, Feb. 7th 1840."This very interesting letter written and signed by Dr. Magill and was addressed to "Commander John H. Latimer U.S.Sloop of War Brandywine in the Mediterranean Sea." Magill was a surgeonserving aboard the USS Ohio which was part of the fleet that was at Port Mahon at the time. In the letter Dr. Magillis writes:
"I feel it is my duty respectfully to report the ungentlemanly & unofficer like conduct of W.W.Crea midshipman on board the ship under your command on the night of Jan. 17th 1840 at the balls given by the officers of the USS Ohio. On the night of the 17th of Jan. I was waltzing with a lady, W.W.Crea kicked me in the groin so hard as to attract the attention of several ladies & Gentlmen present. Not being deposed to subject the gentleman to serious inconsequence in hopes thatreflection would ...... to him the impropriety of said conduct, I merely mentioned it to the ....... ..... ....... Myself from ..... insult by official notice if he still persisted in annoying me. W.W.Crea did again outragemy feelings on the night of the 5th again kicking me when waltzing with the same lady. In accordance with my resolution I have chosen to refer the matters, sir, to your decisions as the only proper resort for ... I am respectfully...... B..... Magill Apt. Surg. U.S.Navy.
The rare 173 year oldletter is in very good condition. Most of the letter is legible, however, there are a few words that I could not decipher. As with all of my items I am starting this sale at $9.99 with !
