1844 Hale & Co. Indpendent Mail Stampless Cover Boston Ma To Springfield :
Nice stampless cover by Hale & Co., independently of (and in competition with) the post office department. Hale was one of relatively few companies that organized mail service between Eastern cities in the 1844-1845 period; the government ultimately put them out of business, but the large rate reductions in 1845 were the ultimate outcome of private competition to the postal monopoly. Small boxed “collect six cents for Hale & Co.” marking in red; addressed to Springfield, Massachusetts. Personal correspondence datelined in December 1844 from Boston. This marking is Type C-4 in the Gutman book on Hale; he censused 80 covers bearing the marking. Light vertical file fold and small “nibble” at upper left; a nice inexpensive example of Hale & Co. stampless mail.
