1844 stampless folded letter with red PHILADELPHIA/Pa. cds and manuscript \"18-3/4\" rate, addressed to Rev. Robert Patterson, care of J. H. Patterson, at Pittsburgh, Pa.

Letter contents dated at Philadelphia, April 20, 1844, from Joseph Patterson, to his brother, Rev. Robert Patterson.

Good content, in which Joseph writes of his unsuccessful efforts to raise money so that Robert can start book operations in Pittsburgh. He is trying to raise the money either by selling his house, or by obtaininga loan on property in Pittsburgh worth 4 times what he wants for a loan. The Patterson family were in the bookselling business in Pittsburgh beginning in the early 1800\'s.

The letter reads:

\"Dear brother,

Thinking you would be anxious to hear from me, as a month has elapsed since I last wrote in reply to your letter and Joseph\'s, I have thought it best to drop a line to you at present. All my efforts since I wrote to you either to make a sale of my house, or effect a loan of six or eight thousand dollars on four times the amt. of Pittsburgh property, have as yet been unavailing, and I begin to fear I shall not be able to accomplish either this Spring. A little advance on the rate of interest here, arising out of improved business, and the extreme reluctance with which loans are made out of the City, make a loan nearly hopeless. Should I be able to make a sale, I might still be able to afford the means you and Joseph desire to commence Book operations, and a few weeks will decide, since if a sale is not made before the last of May, it will have to be postponed until Fall. I think it most likely I shall visit Pittsburgh inMay if I do not sell my house, and soon after if do, when we can have a conference on all those matters and come to some definite plan of operations.

We are all in good health, Joseph Jr. remarkable so, and all unite in love to all our Pittsburgh friends.

Your affectionate brother,

Jos. Patterson\"

Very Fine.
