Binding: Rare and publisher's original Papier Mache binding. The First Papier Mache binding accomplished in the U.S. Gothic binding, contrived to appear as ebony. Publisher's boards of papier mache and plaster, formed using a metal mold and colored black, creating a gothic "carved wood binding". Rich, three dimensional texture. Carved oak leaves, etc. Binding is solid, though many of the thick, cardboard-like chromolithographed pages have come loose. Unlike the broken, chipped, and damaged copies we have seen, this is a gorgeous and treasured example with only minor wear. All Edges gilded. Marbleized endpapers. Volume measures 6 5/8" x 4 7/8". Title blind-embossed on black roan spine.
According to McLean, VICTORIAN BOOK DESIGN, p. 72, one thousand copies were exported to the United States from publisher Longmans, in London. A rare example of a very well preserved Papier Mache binding, manufactured in England to sell to the American market. Ruari Mclean: "it was the first of the so-called `papier mache' bindings, contrived to look like carved ebony. the result was splendidly gothic and impressive." The first use of these materials to reproduce an antiquarian hand made binding, spine titled with unicial letters. This first American edition bears the first "papier mache" binding accomplished in the U.S. The Illustrator and the Book in England, 231; McLean, Victorian Book Design (second edition), pp. 99, 210; Maggs Bros., Bookbinding in the British Isles, part 2, 245; Abbey, Life, 222. Unlike the broken, chipped, and damaged copies we have seen, this is a gorgeous and treasured example.
Rare binding in excellent condition. All 32 thick (cardboard?) chromolithographed pages remain bright and present, though many of them have come loose.
