LeopoldI was a Germanprince who became the firstKing of the Belgians followingBelgian independence in 1830. He reignedbetween July 1831 and December 1865. He established theHouse of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to which allsubsequent Belgian kings have belonged.

Born into the ruling family of the small German duchy ofSaxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, Leopold took a commissionin theImperial Russian Army and fought againstNapoleon after French troops overranSaxe-Coburg during theNapoleonic Wars. After Napoleon\'s defeat,Leopold moved to theUnited Kingdom where he marriedPrincess Charlotte of Wales, the only child ofthePrince Regent (the future King George IV), thussituating himself as a possible futureprince consort of Great Britain. Charlotte diedin 1817, although Leopold continued to enjoy considerable status in England.

After theGreek War of Independence (1821–32), LeopoIdwas offered the position ofKing of Greece but turned it down, believing itto be too precarious. Instead, Leopold accepted the kingship of thenewly-establishedKingdom of Belgium in 1831. The Belgiangovernment offered the position to Leopold because of his diplomatic connectionswith royal houses across Europe. In addition, because he was seen as aBritish-backed candidate, he was not affiliated to other powers, such as France, which were believed to have territorial ambitions in Belgium which mightthreatenthe European balance of power created by the1815Congress of Vienna.

Leopold was crowned in Belgium on 21 July 1831, an event commemoratedannually asBelgian National Day. His reign was marked byattempts by the Dutch to recapture Belgium and, later, by internal politicaldivision between liberals and Catholics. As aProtestant, Leopold was considered liberal andencouraged economic modernisation, playing an important role in encouraging thecreation ofBelgium\'s first railway in 1835 and subsequentindustrialisation. As a result of theambiguities in theBelgian Constitution, Leopold was able toslightly expand the monarch\'s powers during his reign. He also played animportant role in stopping the spread of theRevolutions of 1848 into Belgium. He died in1865 and was succeeded by his son,Leopold II.

Belgium, officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is asovereign state inWestern Europe. It is a small, denselypopulated country which covers an area of 30,528 square kilometres(11,787sqmi) and has a population of about 11million people.

Straddling the cultural boundary betweenGermanic andLatin Europe, Belgium is home to two mainlinguistic groups: theDutch-speaking, mostlyFlemish community, which constitutes about 59%of the population, and theFrench-speaking, mostlyWalloon population, which comprises 41% of allBelgians. Additionally, there is a small group ofGerman-speakers who live in theEast Cantons located around theHigh Fens area, and bordering Germany.

Belgiumis a federalconstitutional monarchy with aparliamentary system of governance. It isdivided into three regions and three communities, that exist next to each other. Its two largest regions are the Dutch-speaking region ofFlanders in the north and the French-speakingsouthern region ofWallonia. TheBrussels-Capital Region, officially bilingual,is a mostly French-speakingenclave within the Flemish Region. AGerman-speaking Community exists in EasternWallonia. Belgium\'s linguistic diversity and related political conflicts arereflected in itspolitical history and complexsystem of government.

Historically, Belgium, theNetherlands andLuxembourg were known as theLow Countries; it once covered a somewhatlarger area than the currentBenelux group of states. The region was calledBelgica in Latin, after theRoman province ofGallia Belgica. From the end of theMiddle Ages until the 17th century, the area ofBelgium was a prosperous and cosmopolitan centre of commerce and culture. Fromthe 16th century until theBelgian Revolution in 1830, when Belgiumseceded from theNetherlands, the area of Belgium served as thebattleground between many European powers, causing it to be dubbed the\"Battlefield of Europe,\" a reputation strengthened by bothworld wars.

Upon its independence, Belgium participated in theIndustrial Revolution and, during the course ofthe 20th century, possessed a number ofcolonies in Africa. The second half of the 20thcentury was marked by rising tensions between the Dutch-speaking and theFrench-speaking citizens fueled bydifferences in language and theunequal economic development of Flanders andWallonia. This continuing antagonism has led to severalfar-reaching reforms, resulting in a transitionfrom a unitary to a federal arrangement during the period from 1970 to 1993.Despite the reforms, tensions between the groups remain; the formation of acoalition government took 18 months following the June 2010 federal election.
