A fine example of American mid 19th Century fine binding and color illuminated illustrations. Bound in inset black leather over red and gilt embellished boards, as shown, with central floral designs. The flower bud has since rubbed away and there is some wear, as shown, but still decently kept. Both boards detached cleanly, w/ the spine cover lacking. Page edges shining gilt. Ownership inscription to first EP and Presentation plate, else unmarked; pages with notable foxing. Four chromolithographs and 7 steel engravings, all present as called for on the chromolithographed list of illustrations. This was the first of three annuals, published 1851 to 1853. The content is a mix of poetry, essays and fiction. Authors are mostly women, including Mrs. E.S. Swift, Miss E.W. Barnes, Mrs. Julia Dore, Mrs L.H. Sigourney, Mrs J.J. Williams, Mary Young, Caroline May , Alice Carey and Caroline Eustis , among others.All 312pp. present. Striking piece. Good luck!
