Dated August 11, 1851.
Texas Land Grant of 320 acres in Milam District to a James Mayr.
Approximately 14" X 12 1/4". Vellum (calf skin paper), folded.
Signed by the third Governor of Texas, Peter H. Bell andthe Texas Commissioner of Public Lands, George Smyth.
Embossed with two seals - bottom/left & bottom/center (eachjustpartially decipherable).
Small hole at intersection of the top horizontal fold and center fold. At the left seal, about 1/3 of its perimeter is severed. A small patch missing at the center/left margin. And, a 5/8" tear at the upper/right corner. All noted for accuracy.
With magnification and significant patience, the faded handwritten script is readable & basically describes the property being granted.
The document, being aged vellum, is stiff and crinkled (likely influenced by innumerable Texas humidity & drying cycles). Further, there is an irregular mirrored light stain that is most apparent at bottom left and right. That area shows more crinkling - the stain source was likely water that contacted the folded document.
Despite the distressed condition, this is an impressive document.
A similar 1851 Texas Land Grant signed by Governor Bell was saleed here on May 21. This second example is the last Bell-signed Texas Land Grant we have.
