1852 $1,000 Fox And Wisconsin Rivers Canal Bond. Signed By Charles D. Robinson For Sale
This is an original $1,000 "Improvement Fund Certificate" issued by the State of Wisconsin, funding canal work on the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers. Measures about 14" x 11-1/8".Dated at Madison, July 21, 1852. The historic significance of this item is enhanced by the penned signature of Charles D. Robinson, the third Secretary of State and one-time mayor of Green Bay.
Because of the fragile nature of the document -- as witness the detached upper-left quadrant -- I scanned it in its current mylar page and have assembled a composite scan, shown here along with individual scans of each quarter. There are numerous penned notes on the back, which seem to be related to interest payments, but again I did not wish to remove the document from the page to scan the back.
This is part of a largecollection of historic stock certificates and related fiscal paper that was accumulated by a veteran collector 25-50 years ago. Conditionis typical of century-old fiscal paper from dealer stock. Condition issues MAYinclude such things as original portfolio folds, minor paper splits, minor corner creases, edge and corner bumps, punch or ink cancellations, etc., staples (perhaps w/ rust stains), etc. Some certificates will have a lightly pencilled dealer price and/or inventory data in an upper corner, as was common with stock and bond dealersin the 1980s and earlier. Please see the large scans for particulars of the certificate being offered.
