1852 The African Repository - Free Colored People Of Maryland Baltimore Booklet

1852 THE AFRICAN REPOSITORY - FREE COLORED PEOPLE OF MARYLAND BALTIMORE BOOKLET Description

Up for your consideration is this interesting and rare find of an ORIGINAL , September 1852 issue of “The African Repository”, a periodical journal published by "The American Colonization Society" (ACS). Founded in 1816, the ACS was the primary vehicle to support the return of free African Americans to what was considered greater freedom in Africa. The society helped to found the colony of Liberia in 1821–22 as a place for free men of color. Most of this pre-Civil War era issue is devoted to the “Convention of the Free Colored People of Maryland”, held in Baltimore in June of 1852. Other articles include “Letters from Liberia”, “The Slave Trade Suppressed", “Emigration to Liberia”, and much more. See the table of contents on the super-sizeable picture of the cover adjacent to this description. This antiquarian booklet measures approximately 5 ½ by 8 ½ inches and runs about 34 pages. A great piece of history, well worth preserving.

CONDITION: Very Good. This booklet is complete, tight and fully intact. Stampings on the cover indicate it was once the property of both the Dartmouth College and Wesleyan University libraries. It bears a “discard” stamp from Wesleyan. Light edge wear to the cover, with an old signature at the top. The pages are generally supple with some light foxing. No objectionable odors that we can detect. Please click on the super-sizeable photos adjacent to this description for a closer look at some random pages. We always pack securely, and we promise to ship promptly. Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. No hassles here.
