1853 Virginia Military Institute Vmi Report Cadet Fulkerson, Brother's Message For Sale

1853 Virginia Military Institute Vmi Report Cadet Fulkerson, Brother's Message

Folded'Quarterly report of Cadet Fulkerson of the [??] Class, consisting of 49 members. Grades for Mathematics andFrench.

Under habits, it says: "Makes progress slowly", health "good"; Conduct: "36 demerit [?] since [?????]".

Also has a statement of account.

Signed by the Superintendent V.M.I. -- J.H. Smith.

On the back is a message to 'Dear Abram' from brother S.V.F. The dateline is April 24th 1853 (see abstract below).

This came from the estate of a VMI alum (the only VMI ephemera he had were a few Fulkerson items). There was a photocopy of an article in the VMI ALUMNI REVIEW, Fall 1990, which has a photo (?) of Cadet Fulkerson's 1857 report, with the caption: "The Quarterly Report at VMI of Abram Fulkerson, Steptoe's Brother Rat, is the only one in existence for a member of the class of 1857. Fulkerson was later a colonel with the 63rd Tennessee Infantry, CSA; a lawyer; and a member of the Virginia Legislature and U.S. House of Represenatives.

As for S.V.F. that would be Samuel Vance Fulkerson:

See my other sales for the other two Fulkerson items.

Some abstracts from the message:

"I send you your report so that you may see how you stand, and what are your prospects for getting through your examination. I hope you will get through safely, and by the next examination you need have no fears."

"I have been sick for some time ..."

"Frank was here the other day on this way to Washington."

Condition of the item rates average. I hope the scan gives you a general idea of the condition.

An interesting letter good for genealogy and history research. See my other sales for similar items.
