1858-61 Civil War-era Autograph Album Large New Hampshire Poetry-filled Leather For SaleUp for sale is an exquisite Civil War-era autograph album, bound in full leather, containing a great many pages filled with long sections of verse. A large percentage of the place names cite Boscawen Academy in Boscawen, New Hampshire, but other towns such as Exeter, Concord, New Hampton, and Tuftonsborough are represented as well. A few place names in Massachusetts, too.
A large album, and not the typical small oblong pocket-sized version. Titled on front, ALBUM OF REMEMBRANCE, and published by Leavitt and Allen in New York. No date, but earliest entries are dated 1857. Most of the entries cluster between 1857 and 1862, although there is a page in the back with several autographs dated 1883. Most autographs are from 1858-1859, with just a couple after the start of the Civil War in April 1861. Men and women appear equally represented, although the owners name was Jennie.
Album contains several full-page engravings, including a vignette title page. Two of the pages have long prose pieces, even essays ; fifteen have poetic verse; and thirteen have just the persons autograph, date and place. About three or four pieces of color and gilt Victorian die-cut adhered to pages. Album is overall in VERY GOOD condition and very well preserved. Names inside include Annie L. Ham, George H. Brewster, Alma J. Farnham, Susie B. Goodwin, Philip D. Blaisdell, Nellie C. Farnum, George B. Lane, James A. MacPherson, and many more. Leather rubbed and scuffed but hinges firm and pages clean. A rare piece of pre-Civil War New Hampshire history. Good luck!
