1860's George Washington Ferrotype Patriotic Or Presidential Campaign Pin For Sale
Very rare, original, ca1860's American Political / Patriotic Ferrotype Pin featuring a wonderful portrait of George Washington. This beautiful Pin is similar in design to the Ferrotype Campaign Pins issued during the mid 19th century Presidential Campaigns of Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, etc. The Pin measures approx. 7/8" in diameter and features a tintype portrait of George Washington (appears to be from a Gilbert Stuart painting) mounted in a shell brass frame. The Ferrotype originally had a pin back but the pin itself is lacking. There is no text on the surround but a rather elaborate design featuring stars and stripes.
We are unsure of the circumstances under which this wonderful Ferrotype was issued. It could have been issues as early as 1860 as an adjunct to the Presidential Campaign of that year or as late as 1876 during the Centennial Celebration. It was certainly meant to be worn as a symbol of Patriotic zeal and possibly as a pro Union device. Its original intent will likely remain a mystery.
This original, 1860's American Political Ferrotype Pin is in very good to excellent condition. The image itself is clean and crisp and exhibits razor sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality. There is no surface crazing, flaking, surface loss, scratches, damage or repairs of any kind to the image itself. The shell brass mount is well preserved retaining a significant amount of its original, silver gilt surface. As stated above, the Ferrotype lacks its original pin on the reverse. Overall this is a well preserved example of a rare, George Washington Patriotic Ferrotype Pin and it displays beautifully.
A very rare and beautiful, 1860's American Political / Patriotic Ferrotype Pin featuring a wonderful portrait of George Washington and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
