1861GEORGE WASHINGTON / U.S. MINT OATH OF ALLEGIANCEBRONZE MEDAL...DATED: SEPTEMBER 2, 1861

Allegiancemedals were issued during the United States Civil War to U.S. Mint employeesthat swore an allegiance to the Constitution. After three of the five UnitedStates mints fell into Confederate hands, the United States governmentwas concerned that the two remaining mints might see the same fate.The Confederate States of America took over the New Orleans Mint,Dahlonega Mint and Charlotte Mint in 1861. The oath taken by the mintemployees was a publicity stunt deemed necessary because the UnitedStates government was concerned that the workers would align themselveswith the rebels should the mint be captured. The allegiance medal wasgiven to all U.S. Mint employees as a reminder of their oath. There were severaltypes of these allegiance medals issued. Metal composition for thesemedals were: silver, copper and aluminum. The U.S. Mint also produced re-strike pieces that were made ofbronze.
