Excerpts from the letter............."........this morning, for the first for some time, we were in a ???? get it or send ones out. The citizens killing some of our men every few days, but none of our Regiment, but there was ones of the 3rd Ohio Cavalry shot last week by me that came out of a house. There was two of them with prisoners going to General Wood. They shot 12 times before they shot him. He fell dead. His horse run, the other one run and left the prisoners. He went to Decatur.............Mitchell's men are fired at most every day by bushwackers. We look for orders to go to Richmond. Buells boys are the boys that can make them hussle their boats. If they heard that we're there, they would run and leave the country, but we do not leave now, as we have to guard the railroad......." .
