1862 CIVIL WAR LETTER ABOUT JOSEPH JERMAIN SLOCUM by SALLY (L\'HOMMEDIEU) SLOCUM:
$20.50
This very interesting four page Civil War letter was written by Sally Slocum, the wife of Joseph Jermain Slocum to her father. The letter is dated \"Home, May 28th 1862\" and was written on the day Joseph Jermain Slocum mustered in to the 22nd Reg. N.Y. State Militia. Apparently Sally (L\'Hommedieu) Slocum received a letter from her father Stephen satterlee L\'Hommedieu about her husband\'s enlistment into the service. Her father was not happy that his son in-law went to fight for the Union. In this letter Sally berates her father and lets him know how proud she is of her husband. Unfortunately Joseph Jermain Slocum was seriously hurt in an ambush in Tennessee suffering a head wound. Slocum mustered out three months after he enlisted and moved to new York City with his wife. This ineteresting letter shows how the Civil War not only divided the North from the south but also spilt up families as well. Sally (L\'Hommedieu) Slocum was the mother of Colonel Herbert Jermain Slocum. This four page hand written letter is in a fine state of preservation! !
