Up for saleis avintage Civil War Era Soldier letter datelined Ship Island, Mississippi, C.S.A., April 20, 1862. Letter written by Robert H. Crist, Company F, 21st Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. Down the line, Crist would be named Captain 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery. Letter is addressed to P. Crist, Durant, Iowa. This was the writers father. Cover has had the stamp torn away, but is postmarked with a very scarcely seen straight line Ship Island Miss postmark.Ship Island only had a Post Office from 1862 to 1870..Excerpts from the letter......."........One or two Regiments have gone in board the transports. What our destination is, we know not, but suppose it to be somewhere up the Mississippi to occupy some forts........we heard the Merrimac went down to Newport News a few days after we raised hob (?) with those gunboats that lay there. It is well we left there. We hear from Manassas that it is evacuated. We hear by way of the secesh that the Federals are coming down the river. There are troops arriving every few days. There is some 15,000 troops/men here now,,,,,,there are some more Regiments or batteries to come yet.....General B.J. Butler is here.......2 ladies came over from the mainland to claim some furniture property that one of our gunboats had captured on a schooner.....a foraging party went out a few days ago on Horne Island and captured some beef cattle. They brought a cow and calf with them, so the Island is now supposed to be supplied with milk.......I have not tasted milk since I left Baltimore.......there are some 30 or 40 wooden buildings put up since we came here....." ........Letter relatively easy to read.
