Interesting old ledger of"H.A.Davis, Dealer in all kinds of Fancy and Staple Dry Goods Jerseyville."The first entry is dated March 18, 1862 and the last is January 27th, 1863. Itrecords sales of fabric, boots, combs, lace, gloves, string, wool, crochet needles, braid, pants, ties, ribbon, elastic, skirts, socks, silk, linen, collars, etc... along with customers names, amounts paid and notations of accounts settled.It measures15" tallx 6" wide.It has 70 pages of hand numbered content, roughly 1/4 to 1/3 of the pages. There is staining and wearwith sometears on the spine and covers but the pages are secure and quite clean.It will sell without reserve to the highest buyer.

This ledger is not marked IL. When I searched for Jerseyville I only got results for IL, however, someone was kind enough to inform me that there is a Jerseyville, NJ and also ON, Canada. It is likely that it is NJ since it was found in the northeast.

After further research we are quite confident that this ledger is from Jerseyville, IL after all. Here is a link to a Jerseyville, IL business directory dated February 1, 1865. There is not an H.A.Davis listing, however, you will see James McClure listed as a blacksmith, also the surnames Van Pelt, Ford, and Williams which can all be found in the ledger.
