1862 Rockland, Me. Letter Father's Odd Funeral; Civil War Maine Reg't Foss Bros.:
Vintage letter datelined: Rockland Mar the 3 1862 and signed by Mary C. Ingraham who was not the best speller. Mary was writing to her Aunt concerning her father's death and odd funeral held by the old woman. Mary never names this old woman, possibly a stepmother, who Mary thought might have been poisoned. None of the Father's children went to the Tomb on the Commons for his burial. Later he was exhumed and opened up by the Coroners. The Sexton put about a thousand dollars in bonds over the body. (Quite weird - my comment) A second funeral was held and the old woman attended. Also in the letter, Mary asks her Aunt if she has heard anything about Henry and Samuel Foss. The Foss brothers both served in the 28th Maine Regiment Company H. This regiment was mustered in on October 18, 1862 and mustered out by August 31, 1863 after nine months of service. This old letter is stained and has a tiny hole in the center where the creases meet. Since this letter has alreadybeen folded, it willbe mailed that way.
