This item is a wonderful, original letter dated June 19th, 1862, Washington, where Ambrose A. Newbert has written home to his sister, Nancy Fowler, telling her not to worry about them, they found a hidden rebel cannon and will fight to the death to hold on to it....signed on fourth page by Ambrose. Letter is 6x9, four pages, staining, colorful envelope and letter sheet, overall good condition. Cover signed by Major Edwin Metcalf, who was very briefly transferred to Washington as Field Staff before commanding the Rhode Island 3rd Artillery.

Ambrose A. Newbert Residence was not listed; Enlisted on 10/23/1862 at Cumberland, RI as a Private. On 10/23/1862 he mustered into "E" Co. RI 2nd Infantry He deserted on 7/29/1863 at Gettysburg, PA
