1862 Whaling Document: Pay For Officers And Crew Bark Mattapoisett:
This double sided original whaling document dated 1862, is a list of crew members for the bark MATTAPOISETT and their percentage of shares of the voyage and pay. The list is from the captain, Benjamin Gifford who received 1/14 or $1026 to the black cabin boy William Davis 1/200 or $71.
Some of the crew received nothing as they are noted to have deserted and one is noted as indebted to the ship.
On the reverse side is a list of share holders and the amounts they received. The captain and most of the officers were evidently also share holders.
The MATTAPOISETT was originally built at Mattapoisett in 1836 as a brig. She was owned in Mattapoisett, later at Westport, New Bedford and finally Edgartown, Marthas Vineyard where she was abandon in 1888.
The photo posted (not included) shows her at Edgartown.
