An often highly guarded and secretive society, the fraternal brotherhood of the Freemasons remains a subject of wild fascination for historians, scholars, and general enthusiasts alike. Mackey’s Book of the Chapter here has been divested of all matter unnecessary and irrelevant to the real working of the several degrees conferred in Chapters of Mark, Past, Most Excellent Master, Royal Arch Masons, the Order of the High Priesthood and the Ceremonies of the Order constituting and Installing of Officers and ceremonies for Installing the officers of Grand Chapters and Grand Councils as well as Masonic Documents.
Many monitors of the time drew from Thomas Smith Webb as their prototype, and, like it, have been very generally confined to the arrangement of the prayers, charges, and Scripture lessons, which are used in the several degrees, without any, or, at most, a very slight attempt to explain, by commentaries, the symbolic meaning or the historical references of the different portions of the ritual.
Mackey aimed here to place in the hands of every Royal Arch Mason a book in which he may find a lucid explanation all that has excited his curiosity or attracted his interest in the Chapter degrees, and above all, to furnish an elementary treatise of easy comprehension on the symbolism of Royal Arch Masonry, not found in Webb’s monitors.
Dealing Critically and impartially with the traditions, customs, records, degrees and ceremonies of the Brotherhood, this manual contains the actual rites of the craft, extending over a period of some seven centuries and that of its grand structures. Throughout this work contains Masonic symbolism, working tools of Free Masons, the jewels of Freemasonry, secret rituals, the veils of the Royal Arch, and much more including numerous illustrations.
