1863 Bound Volume Of Harper's Weekly Civil War Complete W/ Winslow Homer Plates For Sale
Rare and very important Bound Volume of 52 Issues of Harper’s Weekly for the full year of 1863.This fascinating Volume of perhaps the most important 19th century illustrated magazine published in the United States, includes some of the most highly sought after images produced during the Civil War including a number of important full page plates by Winslow Homer and other famous American Artists.
During 1863, Harper's Weekly was almost entirely dedicated to coverage of the Civil War - its Battles, its Heroes, Its Villains, its Political Ramifications, its effects on African Americans of both the North and South and the Human side of this horrific American Conflict. Included in this volume are some of the most highly sought after Winslow Homer Civil War images including “Pay Day”, "Home From the War" and “Shell in the Rebel Trenches” along with a number of other works by Homer. This volume measures approx. 11 1/2” x 16” and 1 7/8” thick. It is Volume No. VII and contains all 51 issues for the year - each issue is complete with no pages missing or articles clipped (lacks the first issue of the year).
This important Bound Volume measures approx. 11 3/4” x 16 1/2” and 2 1/8” thick. It is Volume No. IX and contains 52 issues for the year of 1863 (lacking the 1st issue of the year only) - each issue is complete with no missing, clipped or seriously damaged pages.
This fantastic, Civil War year of Harper’s Weekly contains page after page and illustration after illustration of Battles, Generals, Southern Cities, Military Camps, Black Americana plates, Confederate Army illustrations and everything one would expect from a “News” magazine during an all encompassing conflict such as the American Civil War. There is very little room in these issues for other American or Foreign news and events but the marriage of the Prince of Wales is covered in one of the issues. Of special interest in this volume is the extensive treatment of the Emancipation of the Southern Slave population - much is written on the subject and there are MANY full and part page illustrations of slaves crossing into Union lines in response to their emancipation. Coverage of the New York Draft Riots (the real story of the Gangs of New York) and the Battle of Gettysburg are two other highlights in this journal so full of important events that it is difficult to list them all. Everything imaginable related to the War can be found in these pages including much on the Navies of the Union and Confederate States, the Battles of the War, Maps and descriptions of many of the important Southern Cities, Troop Movements, Political Cartoons, Commentary, etc., etc., etc. At some point during this year Thomas Nast became one of Harper's most prolific War Scene illustrators (this seems to coincide with Winslow Homer's trip to cover the Russian Monarchy) and the volume is jammed full of Nast illustrations.
Harper’s Weekly is one of the most important, original sources of historical information and cultural insights into life in 19th century America that can be found and its treatment of the Civil War and its aftermath is considered by many to be the most complete, contemporary record of events and policies published in the United States. When offered for sale this volume is priced in the $3500 - $5000 range (if you can find a complete volume). This important, complete volume of 53 issues is offered here, as always, with .
The Volume is bound in a half leather and brick colored cloth binding of the period. The covers are intact and sound but worn (see the scans below). The 57 bound issues are complete and generally tight with wear and edge damage as well as staining and soiling to the first few Issues of the year. The vast majority of the pages and plates are undamaged but all are age toned and there is scattered light water staining mostly confined to the edges of some of the pages. There is also scattered spots of foxing, small spots of staining and edge wear. Ten to fifteen of the leaves have longer tears and there are some pages with the typical short margin tears at the center of the outer edge of the leaf caused by careless page turning over the years. There are also a number of pages that were miss-cut by the binder when the individual issues were bound into a Volume - these pages exhibit wide margins at the spine edge and have some of the text or parts of the illustrations trimmed from the outer edge (this appears to have happened with approx 3 Issues). While the Volume is intact, near complete and mostly without serious damage (except as mentioned above), all of the pages are age toned and this is certainly not the cleanest example of a bound Volume of Harpers we have ever handled (nor the dirtiest, most age toned or most damaged).
A wonderful source of very expensive, period Civil War wood engravings and a fantastic addition to any library or collection!!
