1863 LÉgende De Croque-mitaine W/ 177 Engravings By Gustave DorÉ Rare First Ed.:
LA LÉGENDE DE CROQUE-MITAINE, by Ernest L’Epine. Illustrée de 177 VIGNETTES SUR BOIS par GUSTAVE DORÉ (177 Wood Engravings by GUSTAVE DORE). Fables 769-778.
Published by Librairie L. Hachett, Paris, 1863. First Edition.
Illustrated with 177 Wood Engravings by Gustave Doré, including a frontispiece, 19 plates printed on their own leaf, and 157 in-text engravings.
Hardcovers, 3/4 red leather and marbled paper covered boards, top page edges stained gilt, marbled endpapers, 10” x 13”, 274 pages.
GOOD PLUS condition: Covers are worn at the corners and spine folds, there is a thumbprint size bump to the middle of the front edge of the front and rear covers, there is some cracking and fraying to the top edge of the spine, nonetheless the covers are sturdy and attractive; internally, the front inner hinge is cracked but holding well; there is the bookplate of “Harry Walter Cholmley” on the front pastedown; there is heavy foxing to the blank front and rear endpapers (perhaps from the marbled endpapers ), lesser foxing to the next first and last few pages, and almost None to the rest of the pages (perhaps printed on better paper); the text pages and all the inner pages have some light creases from handling and use, but overall the inner pages are lovely - tight, bright, clean and unmarked. All the GUSTAVE DORE plates and illustrations are GORGEOUS.
RARE GUSTAVE DORÉ ILLUSTRATED BOOK. This book is in Henri Leblanc’s 1931 reference work “Catalogue De L'Oeuvre Complet De Gustave Dore”, page 221.
