HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: On November 8, 1863—just eleven days before he delivered the Gettysburg address—Gardner photographed Abraham Lincoln. With the outcome of the war still open to doubt, Lincolns face has etched on it the terrible burdens he bore.
DESCRIPTION: This somber, stalwart Abraham Lincoln faces straightforward, as though he not looking at the camera but, instead, at the horrors of some distant battlefield. The result is this forceful image of a man bearing the weight of the horrendous decision he had to make on a daily basis.
Original Media: Alexander Gardner originally did the image on a glass negative. This new print is based on that image.
PHOTOGRAPHER: Alexander Gardner was born in Scotland where he worked as an editor and reporter before joining Matthew Brady's portrait studio in 1856. Gardner argued with Brady about the attribution of photographs and published his own book of Civil War photographs. After Gardner left Bradys employ he opened his own studio in Washington, D.C. Many believed that Gardner was Lincolns favorite photographer. Interestingly, Gardner was an avowed socialist and utopian.
