1863 Union Soldier's Patriotic Cover And Letter W/nashville Tn Cancellation For Sale
1863 Union Soldier's Patriotic Cover and Letter
w/Nashville TN Cancellation. Cover
is franked with a Scott 65 US 3c Washington
stamp--not in the greatest state (see pictures). Not exactly sure if cover and
letter go together. But given the patriotic cachets on both, I think they
might. Cover was sent to "S." or "J." (not sure which)
Henry Drummer in Troy NY
and is from the Army of the Cumberland
and dated 05/10/1863. The letter is dated 11/13/1862 (letter is signed by David
Drummer). In the letter, the soldier talks about having left Decatur AL and
marching 160 miles which included fighting the "guerrillas" all the
way, apparently, to Nashville TN. He talks about the soldiers having no coffee
or tea to drink except for only Cumberland River
water. He also speaks about Gen. John C Breckinridge and his guerrillas. He
speaks about a Union General--could not decipher his name--bringing his army up
and breaking the blockade that was preventing such things as getting letters
back home. I have tried to provide the best pictures I can of the letter, and
hopefully, you can decipher more of it than I have. Overall condition of the
cover and letter is fair with expected age conditions which are apparent in the
pictures. Both would make a fantastic additions to any postal history or civil
war history collection.
