Up for sale is a vintage Civil War Era letter datelined Camp at Chattanooga Tennessee July 21, 1864. Letter written by Sergeant Albert B. Hays, Company H, 78th Pennsylvania Volunteers.. Excerpts from the letter......"..........on the 11th we left Chattanooga as train guard....got as far as Dalton...arrived at marietta...this is a very handsome town before the war, had population of about five thousand.....little of the town is destroyed or injured......two of (Company) H were wounded by collision between Big Shanty and Marietts........a special detail came for me to take charge of 12 men to accompany some of General Steedman's staff on an inspection tour. General Steedman commands the military district of the Ettowa...Left Chattanooga at 8 a.m.....Rome is by far the most handsome town I have ever seen in the South. Its population is 5,000 and has been quite a manufacturing place. It has suffered little by armies......arrived at Dalton...3 of Company A wounded badly by accident near Adairsville....Dave McQuiston is now in jail at Chattanooga. He will be formally court martialed for circulating a report that Company H was captured......"
