Handwritten Civil War Diary, Journal
Butler's History of Farmington, Maine, 1776-1886 in Franklin County, Maine states that Asa Jennings likes his father and grandfather was a patriot and soldier, entering the United States Service in 1862 as a private, Co. G 17th Regiment, Maine Vol..Having a special faculty for hospital work, he was transfered to that branch of service. At Gettysburg he was attached to the First Division, Third Corps Hospital, having a surgeons charge of several hundred disabled soldiers for some days. His duties until the end of the war when he received an honorable discharge after nearly three years of service. His 1864 diary has written information on every day of the year. Weather updates are found along the edges of each page using single words like sunny, warm, rainy, pleasant, etc. Asa was home until Thursday, January 7th when he left home to rejoin his regiment. He left Boston on Friday paying $10.00 for ticket to Washington. Arrived in Washington at sunset on Saturday the 9th. Left Washington on Sunday the 10th at 9.45 and arrived at Brandy Platform between 2 & 3. Writes about doing washings, selling items, splitting wood and getting timber for his tent. Friday the 29th slept in his tent for the first time. Marching orders on Feb. 6 and marched next day at daylight. Policing on the 10th. Sick for 3 days. Feb. 20th fixing the hospital. Bought 100 cigars for $2.00. Mar. 23, drew a haversack. Mar. 30th was ordered to change camps with the 3rd Div. Drawing rations for several days. Apr. 12th, ordered to increase the number of nurses. May 6 fighting started at daylight. The next day broke up the hospital and marched 2 1/2 miles and the next day 6 or 7 miles. Fighting, death and wounded for the next few days. Sent most of the wounded to Fredericksburg. May 20th, sent all the wounded away and moved into the woods, out of sight. Took nearly 600 prisoners. May 30th, they are 14 miles of Richmond. Early June more fighting. On furlough July 20th to Aug.18. Sept 27th, 400 troops sent away to City Point. The remaining days of the year he tells about about nursing and people passing, etc. Info on the back of the diary gives written numbers of soldiers killed and wounded in the month of May in the 17th Maine Reg. Condition; Solid spine, wear on edges, all pages intact, writing in pencil, most writing is readable and very light staining at the bottom of most pages. Market fresh. .
