1864 General Sherman In Atlanta 11x17 Photo Print March To Sea Civil War 1279 For Sale
The2FunAdGuyz offer a new, high quality reproduction, print of an incredible 1864 photograph of General William Tecumseh Sherman and his staff during the occupation of Atlanta. General Sherman is the bearded man in the center, leaning against the breach of a gun. In the fall of 1864 (September through November to be precise) Sherman had successfully dislodged Hood from the one of the major munitions centers of the Confederate States of America. Sherman chose to give his men a much needed rest for the next several months. During that period, George N. Barnard, an official photographer with the Chief Engineers Office, took a series of photographs that were among the best of what was called The War in The West. A fire destroyed much of the series when Sherman exploded the military facilities before he left in November. This photograph became a stereographic card that was used to create this print.
The identity of the other people in the photograph is unknown but if anyone knows for sure, please let us know.
The caption at the bottom reads: General William T. Sherman, In Center Leaning on the Breach of The Gun, & His Staff. Federal Fort No. 7, Atlanta, Georgia, 1864
