1864 Ky Emancipation Deed Slave George 16 Months After Emancipation Proclamation For Sale
Because the Emancipation Proclamation made by President Abraham Lincoln January 1863 freed only those slaves in states that remained in rebellion slaves in states such as Kentucky remained enslaved. This scarce and historic document clearly points up that distinction. Text as follows:
“We Daniel P. and Ann E. Bedinger of Nicholas County, state of Kentucky, do hereby Emancipate & set free George, a slave belonging to said Ann E. Bedinger, about 33 (thirty-three) years of age; on condition that he will leave this state of Kentucky within one week from this date not to return and we request the county court of Nicholas county to give him his free papers whenever he complies with the law. This the 7th day of May, 1864. D. P. Bedinger Ann E. Bedinger”
