16mo. 150 pages.Complete withthe errata slip at the front and the printed advertisementas the endpaper at the rear. Bound in quarter green cloth with printed paper-covered boards. A very nice example of aConfederate Imprint. The binding is sturdy, and the cloth spineis still secure.Inner hinges are secure. The text shows the expected toning, but there is no heavy foxing, and the book isgenerally quite clean. Although the title page states \"Volume I\", we see no indication that a Volume II was ever published. Corresponds with Parrish & Willingham [8923].

Simply signed on the front flyleafby \"Broadus.\" This is J. A. Broadus, or John Albert Broadus (1827-1895). Broaduswas aBaptist minister, originally from Culpeper County,Virginia and who studied at thenUniversity of Virginia inCharlottesville where he later became a pastor. In 1859 he became a professor of NewTestament interpretation at the newly openedSouthern Baptist Theological Seminary in Greenville, South Carolina. During the Civil War the Seminary closed, and he was a chaplain for some time inRobert E. Lee\'sArmy of Northern Virginia. In 1877 the Seminary reopened and moved to Louisville, Kentucky.Broadus became Seminary\'s second president in 1888.

Basil Manly (1825-1892) was a southern Baptist minsiter born in South Carolina. His family moved to Alabama where his father was the president of the University of Alabama (1835-1855). Basil Manly began to preach at 19, and he went north to seminary. The Southern Baptist Convention was formed in 1845, and Manly transferred to Princeton Theological Seminary and graduated in 1847. He actually helped form the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary with Broadus as well as William Williams and James Petigru Boyce (the first president).

This is a very rare Confederate Imprint. There are currently no other copies that we have been able to find on the market; nor have we found any sale records for it. This copy is in nice condition and has a great association. THIS DOES NOT CONTAIN THE TEXT OF THE NEW TESTAMENT. It is a series of questions and answers for New Testament study. While the signature is simply \"Broadus\", we have other books signed \"J. A. Broadus\" from the same collection. Our Facebook Photo Album of this book includes a photo of the signature of J. A. Broadus in the other 19th centurybook we have(which is not a Civil War book). A nice copy of a rare book.
