1866 Circus Sideshow Freak Cdv Photo Of Bearded Lady Amanda King / P. T. Barnum For Sale
Very rare, 1866, CDV Photograph of Sideshow / Circus attraction Miss Amanda King "The Bearded Lady". This wonderful, CDV Photo measures 2 1/8" x 3 3/8" and is mounted on its original, square corner, gold border, photographer's Card Mount (overall size 2 1/2" x 4"). The Image pictures "Miss Amanda King" in 3/4 figure seated in a photographer's studio with her right elbow resting on a draped side table. She wears an elaborate, formal gown and what appears to be a tiara. Honestly "she" looks somewhat like a "he" in drag with a whispy groth of hair on "her" face but we have uncovered other images identifying Miss King as a Circus / Sideshow "Bearded Woman".
The CVD Photo is identified with manuscript text on the reverse that reads simply "Miss Amanda King". The CDV also carries the mark of the photographer on the reverse - D. B. Spooner & Co. of Springfield, Massachusetts. There is also a 2 cent U.S. Revenue Stamp on the reverse signed with the initials of the photographer and carrying the manuscript date "June / 1866".
As with many of Side Show / Human Oddity performers from the 1860's, it is difficult to uncover any significant information regarding the history or the career of "Miss Amanda King". We have found a few other Photographs of her but no significant biographical information.
This wonderful and very rare CDV Photograph is in very good condition. The Photograph itself exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality. There are some light ink stains on the Bearded Lady's dress as can be seen in the scans below. Otherwise both the Photograph and the card mount are clean and crisp and well preserved.
A very rare and original, 1866, CDV Photograph of Sideshow / Circus attraction Miss Amanda King "The Bearded Lady" and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
