1867 Union Victory Civil War Elsmore Forster Laurel Wreath Ironstone Coffee Pot:
1867 Elsmore Forster LAUREL WREATH Ironstone COFFEE POT Union Victory CIVIL WAR
You are offerding on a beautiful and quite rare Elsmore and Forster victory laurel wreath pattern coffee pot. This pattern, manufactured in England, was conceived for the American market. Dating from 1867, it was created to commemorate the Union victory in the American Civil War. One site, thepotteries.org, implies that the “victory” may also refer to the impeachment of Southern-born President Andrew Johnson making way for the election of Civil War Union hero Ulysses S. Grant. The victory laurel wreath pattern, featuring circular wreaths adorned with a single star, is exceedingly rare and highly collectible. Even less common is the copper luster version offered here. (Update: A fellow er informed us that this is not the correct lid for this piece. This lid is from a Ceres Shape coffee pot. It does fit though, so we'll send it along.)
This enormous coffee pot measures nearly a foot tall (about 11-1/2”) from the base to the top of the lid handle. It measures about 10” from the tip of the spout to the outer reaches of the handle. The bottom of the coffee pot has a raised Elsmore & Forster maker’s mark. This coffee pot is in fantastic shape overall. There are no chips whatsoever…not even under the lid. There is almost no wear to the copper luster either…not even at the tip of the spout. There are a few small flaws, however, that should be mentioned. First, there is a tiny hairline crack in the upper border of the coffee pot body measuring 1-3/4” in length. Again, this is not a huge, gaping flaw. It is merely a hairline crack. Here are multiple views of the same crack. There is a second crack in this piece which is luckily only apparent on the inside of the coffee pot. It measures somewhere in the neighborhood of 1-1/2” and stands out due to the coffee staining found throughout the pot’s interior. The only other issue that should be mentioned is generalized crazing to the finish. Since there is no staining to the outside of this coffee pot, the crazing is only apparent upon close inspection. This very rare 1867 Laurel Wreath pattern coffee pot commemorating the Union victory in the American Civil War would make a fine addition to any ironstone or historical Americana collection. It is one of two pieces we acquired together. We will also be listing a very rare Victory Laurel Wreath sugar bowl this week. Be sure to check our other sales.
