1868 Horatio Seymour / Francis Blair Jugate Presidential Campaign Token /medalet For Sale
Very rare and beautiful, original, 1868 Horatio Seymour and Francis Blair Presidential Campaign Brass Jugate Medalet in near mint condition. This original 1868 Presidential campaign item measures approx. 1 1/8" in diameter and features bust images of Seymour & Blair on the front with the words "Seymour & Blair / 1868". The reverse has a beautiful, laurel wreath design and reads "General Amnesty / Uniform Currency / Equal Taxes / & Equal Rights".
Horatio Seymour was the Democratic Party's Candidate in the Presidential Election of 1868 and Francis Blair their Vice-Presidential Candidate. Reconstruction was the hotly debated issue in both the north and south. Three of the former Confederate states (Texas, Mississippi, and Virginia - all of which would have been heavily pro Seymour country) were not yet readmitted to the Union and therefore could not vote in the election. In spite of the words on the reverse of this beautiful Medalet, Seymour ran what historian David Blight has called "arguably the most openly white supremacist election campaign in American history," the Democrats extensively used the slogan "This Is a White Man's Country, Let White Men Rule.".
This outstanding, Brass Jugate Medalet is in excellent, original condition - the strike is strong and crisp exhibiting only the very lightest wear to the highest spots. We have made no attempt to clean or shine this beautiful Medalet and it retains a rich, warm age appropriate patina without significant surface tarnish or any oxidation.
A very rare and beautiful, 1868 Horatio Seymour / Francis Blair Presidential Campaign Jugate Medalet in simply outstanding, original condition and a fantastic addition to any collection!!

Important Notes about Shipping Charges:
The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee. Please contact us if there are any issues regarding the cost of shipping.
