Grant Brass Shell Pin

This brass shell pin from the 1868 presidential campaign of Republican Ulysses S. Grant features a ferrotype portrait of the candidate set in an ornate oval shell frame with eagle above, Flags at each side and crossed ribbons inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM.

This item is similar to USG 1868-136 in Edmund Sullivan’s book American Political Badges and Medals 1789-1892. This popular shell design was used for elections from 1864 to 1880.

This 1” x 1 ¼” campaign pin is in Very Good condition. There is a minor vertical bend to the ferrotype seen from an angle, but otherwise it is clear and problem-free. The reverse straight pin is missing.

Note: I am member #6556 of APIC (American Political Items Conservators) and I guarantee this piece to be an original political item as described.
