1870's George Armstrong Custer & Indian Wars Relics Cabinet Card Photo For Sale
Very rare & wonderful, 1870’s Cabinet Card Photograph of a display of Indian Wars relics, Flags and photographs of George Armstrong Custer in the lobby of a Boston Theater where a presentation / lecture related to the Battle of the Little Bighorn was to be presented.
This fascinating and fantastic, original card mount photo measures approx. 7 3/4" x 4 1/2" and is mounted on its original photographer's card mount (overall size of card mount is 8 1/2" by 5 1/4"). The Photo was likely taken at a late 1870's GAR Encampment / Reunion or during a lecture tour where General Phil Sheridan was presenting a lecture related to the 7th Cavalry and the Battle of the Little Bighorn (otherwise known as Custer’s Last Stand).
The Photograph pictures the lobby of a Boston Theater or Auditorium which has been festooned with relics and displays related to George Armstrong Custer and the Indian Wars. At the lower right there is a caged ticket booth with text above that reads “Tickets Here”. At the center left there is a wonderful, full size Sioux Indian Teepee with the figure of a Native American Indian inside. On the wall oat the far left there is a large portrait of Custer in his Indian Wars period uniform and at the center right, above the entrance to the Theater / Hall there is a portrait of Custer wearing his pre-Civil War military uniform.
Above this portrait is what appears to be an Indians War period Battle Flag surmounted by a pair of crossed Cavalry Guidons of the Civil War Period. The Photograph carries the mark of the photographer - Allen & Rowell of Boston on the reverse. Unfortunately the photograph is not identified in any other way. It came to us from the estate of Seth Boyden, the great American Inventor and Practical Scientist. As part of the estate, a large amount of Civil War and Indian War ephemera and relics belonging to Seth Boyden’s son (who served throughout the both Wars) were found. Included were a number of 1870’s Cabinet Card photographs of Civil War Generals (including Sheridan) and GAR related images - this is the only photo we were able to obtain from this group but because of the association to the other images we are confident that this is a photograph taken in the 1870’s and somehow related to a GAR Encampment or lecture series presented by General Phil Sheridan. Any information that would help to definitively identify the content and/or context of this Photograph would be greatly appreciated.
This very rare and wonderful, George Armstrong Custer subject, Albumen Cabinet Card Photo is in very good condition. The albumen photo itself exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality but has scattered foxing. The card mount has some light soiling and very light edge wear along with the same foxing seen on the Image.
