1870s High Wheel Bicycle Cdv Photograph - Builder's Model / Advertising Photo:
Exceptionally Rare and important, original 1878, Advertising CDV Photograph of a High Wheel Bicycle identified as "The Wonder" - a model of the very early "Cogent Bicycle" manufactured in Wolverhampton, England. This very early High Wheel Bicycle Photograph is actually a Builder's Photo / Catalog Photo Card / Salesman's Sample Photograph used as advertising for this important, early High Wheel Bicycle. This wonderful, original 19th century Cabinet Card Photo measures approx. 3 3/4” by 2 3/8” and is mounted on its original CDV card mount (card size is 4" by 2 1/2").
This fantastic Albumen CDV Photograph shows the High Wheel Bicycle displayed as one would see it in a showroom. Period manuscript text on the front of the card mount reads "The Wonder" and a hand ink stamp on the reverse further identifies the Penny Farthing Cycle with text that reads "Henry Clarke / Sole Manufacturer of The Cogent Bicycle ' Cogent Works / Darlington Street, Wolverhampton".
Although the CDV is not dated, we found a number of advertisements in periodicals dated 1877 and 1878 for The Cogent Bicycle Works and their "Wonder" model High Wheel Bicycle. We have include scans of two of those print advertisements (both published in 1878) below.
Pre 1880 Photographs of Bicycles are almost unheard of and the fact that this is a "Builder's Photo" / Advertising Photograph and a CDV to boot make this among the very rarest and most important early High Wheel Bicycle Images we have ever come across (much less owned ourselves). We are proud to offer this amazing piece of Bicycle History, as always, without reserve and with the confidence that it will attract

Important Notes about Shipping Charges:
The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee. Please contact us if there are any issues regarding the cost of shipping.
