DescriptionThis 1870s wall plaque by Peter Dümlerdepicts portrait of Minerva on salt glazed stoneware. Wall plaque has grey body with high relief applied decoration in cobalt blue depicting profile head of Minerva in the Renaissance style. The helmet and armour are decorated with low relief classical subjects: the helmet depicts Achilles dragging Hector round Troy, Priam begging for the body of Hector in Achilles' tent, and Achilles fighting Hector; the gorgette depicts the ransoming of Hector's corpse. The background incised with foliate scrollwork and a scroll incised 'MINERVA' . The border decorated in relief with pairs of confronted birds, an owl and an eagle, amidst foliage. Back rim is pierced with holes for hanging and displaying on the way. The back displays notations by former owner of what the plaque is and where they purchased the charger. This piece is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or crazing. Minor flaws from firing and making of this wonderful stoneware piece. Measures 14" diameter x 1 3/8" diameter. PeterDümler was known to embed his initials within his artwork - I have yet to find them.
