HILL\'S MANUAL
OF
SOCIAL & BUSINESS FORMS:A GUIDE TO CORRECT WRITINGBy Thos. E. HillChicago: Moses Warren & Co.
1875It wasfollowing the Civil War that the Victorian Age reached its full glory and withit a commitment to excessive refinement. The Industrial Revolution wasbuilding wealthy men and families left and right. It was in this periodthat Thomas E. Hill first published his Hill\'s Manual of Social and Business Forms. The rapid industrialization hadalso brought about increased economic opportunities, and those rising in theclass hierarchy desired to know what was the proper way to dress and act andeat.

The rules were elaborate: coats, gloves, hats- when to take them off, howto take them off, when to leave them on and where to put them in someone else\'shouse – these simple acts all assumed great importance. Eating fruit, riding in the park, the ballroom, the proper dress for each stage of the dayand each activity. Letter-writing, how to propose to a young lady and howto respond to a young man\'s proposal - properly. And in the age beforetypewriters - penmanship was all important. The conduct of business also had its own rules, as well as politics.Beyond that a certain educational acumen was expected among anyone seeking tobelong to the right society.

There was acertain way to put things such as in Letters of Recommendation, Letters ofSympathy, Letters Asking Favors, Letters of Introduction, Letters of Congratulation,Letters of Advice and Letters of Excuse.

The authorwrote that “The result sought to be accomplished by this book is to give both aknowledge of easy, beautiful penmanship, and its correct application in thewriting of a great variety of forms which enter into the every-day business andsocial relations of life, thus supplying the public with a text-book on writingand written forms alike, useful to all classes of society, and meeting anurgent demand heretofore unsupplied.”
