1876 Lincoln Patent Fringing Machine Sewing Machine Accessory For Making Fringe:
Rare and fascinating, original 1876 Patented Machine that created a fringe on fabric to be used in Sewing Clothing or creating novelties with fabric or silk. This beautiful and finely crafted Machine is made of cast iron, brass and wood and was manufactured by W.V. Phillips & Co of Providence Rhode Island und the patent granted to Jesse B. Lincoln in 1876.
Commonly referred to as “Lincoln’s Patent Fringing Machine” this wonderful device measures approx. 4 1/2" tall and 4" by 3 1/5" at the base. The machine is made in the form of a miniature work table with a cast iron base and a brass table top. When turned the iron handle on one side of the table rotates a disk which has thin, hooked needles attached. At the same time the rotary motion is transferred to a large brass gear which turns an iron spindle with its attached wooden rollers that rests on the top of the “table”. A strip of fabric would be positioned under the wooden roller and by turning the handle the roller would feed the fabric to the rotating disk of hooked needles. Those needles create an even and beautiful “feathered” fringe to the fabric - a look that was very popular in clothing of the period. The Machine can also be used to create a nice even fringe to a silk ribbon used to make a political Ribbon Badge or Novelty Ribbon of any kind.
The stamped, manufacturer’s mark on the brass table reads “Patented Nov 21, 1876 / W. V. Phillips & Co. / Providence, R.I. / Manufacturers & Sole Proprietors”.
