Until recently, many of Freemasonry's finest books were approaching the ‘extinct” list. One of those was “Freemasonry in the Holy Land” which was not just a book, but a true Masonic saga! Time had, unfortunately, rendered it amongst the ‘rare’ titles. Written by Freemason Robert Morris, the book is a series of notes made during a series of Masonic researches in 1868 in Asia Minor, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, and Europe, and the results of much correspondence with Freemasons in those countries.
Given the ‘mysterious’ declining state of Freemasonry, Morris serves as an important icon of the Craft. His 1868 adventure in the Holy Land is not just an interesting collection of travel, history, geography, culture, archaeology and adventure; but also a sample of the thought processes and attitudes of the mid-1800s. Among other details, Morris’ book was supplemented by artists - not photography - given the budding science of photography – then a new technology and art. As a whole it traces Freemasonry back to its origins and captures in intimate detail the ancient mysteries surrounding the craft.
